Native Americans from the Tongva tribe lived in the area that is now known as
Reseda and were based close to the La River. H.J. Henry E. Huntington's syndicate, the Suburban Homes Company, expanded his Pacific Electric Railway (Red Cars) down the Valley to Owensmouth in 1909. (currently Canoga Park). Road plans were presented by The Suburban Home Company, along with plans for the cities of Van Nuys, Reseda (Marian), and Canoga Park (Owensmouth). In 1915, the towns of the metropolitan areas were incorporated into Los Angeles.
Reseda was founded in 1912 as the town of Marian on land that was formerly a part of the San Fernando Mission. It was so named in honor of Marian Otis Chandler, Harry Chandler's companion and the daughter of Los Angeles Times publisher Harrison Gray Otis. Reseda odorata, sometimes known as mignonette in English, is a fragrant plant that is native to several Mediterranean-climated locations and is frequently found in gardens during the summer.
